The bi-annual Picture match was played at Sidmouth earlier this month, writes Paul Willoughby.
This is the match played between the two clubs since 1933 where the prize is The Picture – the original of which is held by the winning club.
The match is played off scratch so there is no handicap advantage. It is played both home and away with the winner over the aggregate of the two matches retaining The Picture for a year - the loser has a copy for their clubhouse wall.
After the May home match East Devon enjoyed a sixteen-and-a-half, seven-and-a-half advantage.
The ‘away’ fixture saw East Devon fielded a very strong team, but so did Sidmouth who of course also had home advantage.
The morning foursomes proved difficult for the East Devon team and they lost five-and-a-half to two-and-a-half.
In the afternoon, however, East Devon rallied and managed to keep the loss to only nine-seven which was for an overall victory at 26 points to 22.
The Picture has been returned to what East Devon would like to think is it’s rightful place on the wall above the captain’s chair in the East Devon clubhouse!
