MADEIRA LADIES: THE MADEIRA Cup is up and running and there was an exciting and indeed marathon meeting in the 1st round with May Dyson ultimately seeing off Jean Healey in a contest that ran for 28 ends, Healey winning 21-19.

The opening round also produced another titanic battle when Debbie Fox, trailing 6-17 after 14 ends, staged a comeback, only to be held at bay by Margaret Mahon who moved into the second round courtesy of a 21-13 win after 22 ends.

Other round one winners were C Macaulay, K Andrews and J Rainton.

Four second round matches have also been completed in the past week with C Hadfield, J Smith, N Fiddimore and D Wellington all making it safely into round three.

After losing an early season game at Topsham, Madeira turned the tables in the reverse fixture to claim maximum points, winning on all three rinks.

There was disappointment though for one of the two sides competing in the Grace Matthews Top Club, beaten 3-2 by St Thomas but there was however, better news from a 21-12 four wood singles success for Eileen Bagley and also a 20-14 triumph in the triples for Pat Cain, Pat Harris and Sandie Cox.
