Brixington Blues Under-14s were 4-2 winners when they entertained Heavitree in an Exeter and District Youth League game.

Blues began well and were soon dominating play. The Heavies were sharp on the break, but the Blues back line of skipper Jake Haggerty, Harrison Fox, Lewis Ayley and Zac Brown were equal to whatever the visitors could throw at them.

The deadlock was broken when, after some neat approach play involving Jack Drew-Cull, Ben Geare and Joel Knott, Oliver Bradley fired Blues into the lead. The Heavitree response was good and only a superb save from goalkeeper Russ Bracey denied them a swift equaliser.

A fine passing move that was started in defence ended with Drew-Cull making it 2-0 and Blues, with Jayden Marles and Elliott Bowyer keeping then Heavies’ full backs busy, it was something of a surprise when the visitors struck just before the interval and Blues went off at the break with a 2-1 lead.

Early in the second half a Jake Haggerty corner was turned home by Drew-Cull to make it 3-1. Another fine Bracey save denied the Exeter-based side a second and, with Joel Knott and Ben Geare dominating the middle third of the pitch, it was no surprise when an Oliver Bradley goal made it 4-1.

Heavitree, to their credit, never gave up and they did score a late second, but Blues were not to be denied a deserved victory. The Blues Man of the Match award went to Ben Geare. A fine all-round performance left Blues boss Dave Haggerty and coaches Chris Drew-Cull and James Beverley were left feeling very satisfied at full-time.
