Darke delights as Gazelles share 78 goals with Kenn Valley in Exmouth Netball League meeting

Two of this season’s new teams in the Exmouth Netball League, Gazelles and Kenn Valley played out an entertaining draw when they met each other in an opening game of the new campaign.

Gazelles struck first with a fine shot from Charlie Baker which led to a first quarter of end-to-end action that came to a halt with Gazelles, thanks mainly to the defensive skills of Fern Watts and Anna Higgins, holding a 9-4 lead.

The second quarter saw Kenn Valley close the gap, despite many interceptions from Shannon Darke and Sophie Minter and, at half-time, the Gazelles lead had been trimmed to two goals at 17-15.

Gazelles introduced Lauren Coates and Hannah Abraham and the third quarter saw plenty of goals with Baker and Rhian Rose combining to net 13 for gazelles whole Kenn Valley were almost as prolific, scoring a dozen goals and the quarter ended with Gazelles holding a three shot lead at 30-27.

With all to play for in the final quarter, Gazelles captain Megan Ford led from the front,, encouraging her team mates and they responded with a further nine goals. However, in keeping with the enthralling end-to-end nature of the encounter, Kenn Valley scored a dozen more and, with the clock ticking down the score was locked at 39-all. That’s how it ended with honours even! For Gazelles, the Player of the Match award went to the deserving Shannon Darke for her many interceptions and the her uncanny ability to always find some space on the court.
