BUDLEIGH very nearly enjoyed the perfect afternoon as they claimed 19 points from a 49 run win over Bradninch at Ottermouth on Saturday afternoon.Batting first, Budleigh got to within a single run of maximum batting points when they closed on 199-8 thanks to a superb innings of 82 from Tom Viljeon, whilst Bobby Dawson chipped in with 35. Former Budleigh player, Joel Murphy, now skipper of the Mid Devon side, returned to his old hunting ground and claimed three wickets.Post-tea, the Budleigh bowlers took charge and wickets fell at regular intervals, the final one being taken with the Bradninch total on 150.Budleigh had gone into the meeting without the services of Omari Banks for the game, as he was required by Somerset, and they also had to do without leading wicket taker Matt Webb, who took the opportunity over the weekend to indulge in his other passion of saloon car racing. They did, however, give a first outing to spinner Aditya Rai whose signature was sealed in the days prior to the game. The Indian born spinner's registration had to undergo something of a paper trail before the Devon League gave the nod for him to play.He made an impressive start to life at Ottermouth with a four wicket haul. The victory, the third outright success of the campaign, takes Budleigh into fifth after seven matches and they sit some 40 points behind leaders Sidmouth.Next up is Saturday's visit of a North Devon side who were well beaten last weekend when going down by 142 runs to Sidmouth.
