THE Topsham St James promotion bid is over for this season after they were denied the victory they needed by a stubborn Newton St Cyres side.

With skipper Brian Bosomworth absent due to work, and with Vice Captain Jamie Wyman still injured, the very young team, containing five U15s, was led by Brian Jeary who, following the usual Topsham tradition, lost the toss and the team was put in to bat.

Jeary and Jack Richardson opened and the score reached 46 before the former was out for 20 off 39 balls, to be followed 4 overs later by Richardson (21 off 65 balls).

Progress continued steadily, with Alec Bosomworth top scoring with 28 off 42 balls and Ollie Devon 24 off 30 balls.

Kam Singh celebrated his 17th birthday with 20 off 18 balls, including a very large 6, and last man, David Gambie, showed that he can still make runs when they are needed with 16 off 15 balls seeing the Saints to a closing total of 178 all out off 44 overs.

Newton St Cyres lost their first wicket quickly, but there was then a stand of 54 between Mike Parfitt and David Church.

Parfitt went on to make 49 off 77 balls before being the 6th wicket to fall with the score on 85 and with 30 overs gone.

From then on progress was slow but steady, with Topsham taking two more wickets and Newton St Cyres reaching 131 for 8 at the close.

The best bowlers were Jeary with 4-19 and Jack Richardson, with 2-28.

So the promotion dream bites the dust and a campaign, that appeared to be offering so much at the half way stage, has petered out into what looks set to be a decent, if un-glorious one.

That said, there are sufficient youngsters coming through the Bonfire Field ranks to suggest that next season can provide what has been missed out on this term
