BUDLEIGH 2nd XI travelled with a weakened side and were put into bat to face a Sandford team on a roll.Things definitely did not get off to a good start, with the first two balls of the innings taking the senior players of Mark Hammett and Lewis Baker out of the equation to leave Lloyd White and Lloyd Murrin (17) to do their thing, but with the score at 30 for 3, it looked like it was going to turn into an early afternoon for all concerned! However, Budleigh dug in and with good partnerships between James Sharkey (14), Alex Richardson (36) and White, Budleigh got to 166 for 5 with White top scoring with his first league 50. Chris Batten (28) and the tail wagged strongly to bring the total up to 204 after 49 overs. With team spirit at a high, Budleigh gave their all in the field and a superb spell of bowling from Lloyd Murrin deserved so much more than the 1-39 his figures showed. With the score at 75 without loss, the hosts were looking like they were going to run away with the match until 13 year old Joe Marley (1-29) came on and got rid of Pete Whitby (16), and, with two more quick wickets falling, the reply was 110-3 and the outcome of the game back in the balance. However, with home Secretary Paul Smith holding sway at one end, Sandford were always the favourites and a 58 run partnership between Smith and Ryan Glass (29), put the game within reach and with still some ten overs remaining, Smith scored the winning runs to finish with a wonderful unbeaten 90.Budleigh skipper Lewis Baker said: " Today was never going to be easy with such a weakened side but the effort and team spirit the guys gave me today was really impressive, even after finding ourselves at 0-2, two deliveries into the contest! The general performance was most promising and uplifting, and, after the selection headache of this one out of the way, we now have players coming back for Saturday's game with Plympton at Ottermouth.
