DERBY wins are always special and the one that Exmouth under-11 exacted upon neighbouring Budleigh was no exception.
With the Ottermouth side going into the game off a six wins from six sequence, Exmouth had their work cut out. They were however aided by the fact that Budleigh were forced to play without their county players.
Batting first, Budleigh were quickly in trouble thanks to inspired spells from Theo Northover (2-9) and Morgan Wright (2-15). There was also a superb run out from Ed Hurley which all helped reduce Budleigh to 27-5.
Tom Oxland then played an intelligent innings, adding a patient 21 to steady the innings. As the overs counted down Budleigh went after the ball but were pinned back by the consistency of Hurley, Reader and Horler who, despite not claiming wickets, produced disciplined spells of bowling and, with some more excellent supporting ground fielding, the Budleigh innings came to a close on 75.
Despite the early loss of Horler to Devon Short (2-13) who was the pick of the Budleigh bowlers, Reader and Richard Hall took the attack to Budleigh and took the reply to 27 before Hall was out. Reeder was joined by the swashbuckling Ryan Schaefler (24no) who continued his recent good form hitting the ball powerfully both sides of the wicket. Reeder was eventually bowled for 16 by Felix Jones.
Schaefler it was though, who sealed Exmouth’s fourth victory of the season with his third boundary of an impressive innings.
