Exmouth lost their final game of the 2018 Tolchards Devon League campaign, beaten by 70 runs by a Sidmouth side that was able to celebrate winning the title for the seventh time in 11 years, as news filtered through to the Maer ground of a surprise defeat for morning leaders Heathcoat at home to Sandford.
Sidmouth won the toss and opted to bat, but they suffered an early blow with opener Dec Lines run out with the total on nine.
The Sidmouth innings, one that closed on 288-7, was built around a 134-ball knock of 134 from Josh Bess – his innings finally ended by a catch held by Bob Dawson.
Exmouth skipper Callum French used six bowlers with the best return being the 2-33 from David Lye.
The Exmouth reply was launched by Sandy Allen and Bob Dawson and they took the total to 62 before Allen fell to a catch with his score on 30. Thirteen runs were added before Bob Dawson fell for 28. It was soon 97-4 with the swift dismissals of Billy Rudolph and Miles Lenygon and, when George Greenway was out, Exmouth were 130-5. Alvin Pollard joined Dan Pyle, who had been in since the loss of the first wicket, and the pair took the total to 198 when Pollard was trapped leg before for 26. Just two runs were added before Pyle was also trapped leg before, in his case having faced 78 balls for a seven boundary 81. Once Pyle’s fine knock was ended the end followed soon after as the last three wickets added just 18 runs to leave the Maer men well beaten.
