Grant Northover produced an outstanding contribution to the Exmouth II cause on Saturday but it still ended in him being on the losing side.

The unfortunate Northover first claimed a fivefer, finishing with figures of 5-26 as hosts Axminster III were bowled out for 135. Sean Butler chipped in with a brace of wickets for Exmouth who were then in heaps of trouble in the reply with six runs on the board and four batsmen already back in the Cloakham Lawns pavilion!

The skipper Tom Sampford and Northover proceeded to rebuild the run chase and, to their credit, they very nearly bated their side back into contention.

Indeed, had Sampford been able to last a little longer than his knock of 48 then he may well have trooped off victorious at stumps.

As it was Northover finished with 29 runs to sit tidily with his fivefer but Exmouth were bowled out for 109 to lose the game by 26 runs.

That win was the very first of the season for Axminster III for whom Adam Whitehouse claimed eight wickets for 25 runs!
