Topsham St James Under-13 girls played their first ever hardball match when they took on a more experienced Sidmouth side.
Amongst the Saints side was 9-year-old Katy Baylis and the youngster certainly did not look out of her depth at any stage!
Sidmouth batted first and made their way to a close of 138-8.
Maddie Holifield claimed splendid figures of 2-11 from her four overs whilst JoJo Baylis (2-14) and Ellen Day (2-11) both also sent down four overs.
The other successful bowlers were Daisy Bishop and Megan Jones. Despite it being a firs hardball game the Saints fielding was exceptional and there were crisp catches held by JoJo Baylis and Maddie Holifield.
With the teams regular wicket keeper missing the glove duties were shared by Annie Burdick and Tiffany Barron and both performed very well in their new roles.
Batting proved to be a greater challenge for many of the Saints’ players. However, Anna Lamb provided stability and experience at the top of the order to ensure a steady start.
As the innings progressed many of the girls grew in confidence with Molly O’Keefe, Maddie Ross, Harriet Oliver, JoJo Baylis and Daisy Bishop all being retired (rather than getting out) after the agreed number of overs.
Topsham’s reply closed on 119-6 leaving Sidmouth the 19-run victors.
