BUDLEIGH breathed last gasp life into their bid to stay in the Francis Clark Devon League 2nd XI top flight with a 51 run win at the only side to sit below on the morning of the matchday, Hatherleigh.
What's more, the victory sets up a thrilling last day when the Ottermouth men, on their own square, simply need to bank a single point more from their meeting with North Devon that Exmouth II do in their game with champions Sidmouth II at the Maer ground.
After losing the toss, Budleigh were stuck in on a damp pitch but openers, Baker (31) and Rice (9), played very well to see off the opening bowlers. Baker went for 31 with the score at 46. From 81-3, after Hope had gone for 16, Murrin (33) and Burton (31), then put on 44 for the 4th wicket, taking the score to 125 before both went in quick succession.
Wickets then continued to fall and Budleigh finished on 162 all out.
Hatherleigh decided they wanted the heavy roller on the pitch to try and flatten it out before they started their chase, however, all this did was allow skipper, Lewis Baker, and Lloyd Murrin to use the pitch to their advantage.
The pair bowled superbly in tandem, each claiming five wickets as the home side were bowled out for 111. Baker finished with 5-39 from 13 overs and Murrin's fivefer saw him end with figures of 5-25 from 10.2 overs.
Budleigh skipper Lewis Baker said: "We have now brought things back into our own hands after last week's drubbing by Exmouth" Captain Baker said after the game. "We're level on points with one more win. All we need to do is match their points total and score six more than Hatherleigh. I back us to do that. Today was a huge team performance and it was everyone giving 110% that allowed Lloyd Murrin and me to get our name in lights. One more performance like that next week and we will still be here next year.
