EXMOUTH Cricket Club has generously given the Peter Howard Trust Fund the use of The Maer ground next Sunday (June 21), for a youth cricket day.The event is the brainchild of Trustee and East Devon Youth Cricket League Chairman Adrian Codling. EDYCL Clubs were invited to nominate players who are the 'best of the rest' - promising young cricketers who have not played District or County cricket, and who might not otherwise get an opportunity to take a first step beyond club youth cricket. There will be a pairs match for Under-13s in the morning, whilst a group of volunteers provides coaching for the players not on the field at the time. In the afternoon, the format will be repeated for Under-11s.The Trust was established in 2000 in memory of former local cricketer and EDYCL chairman Peter Howard, with the object of furthering the cricket knowledge and ability of young players in the area. It operates on a shoestring, funded by donations and the proceeds of occasional cricket-related events, providing grants to assist young players receive specialist coaching or take part in tours. The event is free for the players, though donations are welcome and there will be a draw with prizes generously donated by Somerset County Sports. PHTF details are on www.devoncricket.co.uk. Spectators are more than welcome to attend.
