Topsham St James suffered a narrow final over defeat in their Bradleys East Devon League Under-15 meeting with Whimple.

Saints batted first and Finn O’Dwyer Stock, who made his highest score in the reverse fixture, showed his liking for Whimple bowling with a rapid 17 as the innings got a quick-fire start, going at eight runs an over!

However, once O’Dwyer Stock fell the pace of the innings slowed right up as Alex Davison (2) and Jim Shepherd (5) as just two runs came off the next four overs.

Robison making another steady contribution of 26 and Mattin retired unbeaten after a hard-hitting 43 that included a brace of sixes and six 4s as the Saints closed their innings on 115.

Whimple got home in the final over from which they needed seven runs, and, despite Tom Sage bagging his second wicket of the game, they got them with two balls to spare.

Tom Hart was the pick of the Saints’ bowlers with figures of 3-13. Shepherd and Inder Singh chipped in with a wicket apiece, Singh’s a flying catch by Davison and Shepherd reacted well for a caught and bowled.
