Exmouth were mighty close to a sensational run chase in the final of the Exeter and East Devon section of the Devon Twenty20 competition, writes Stephen Birley.

Having brushed aside hosts Heathcoat in the semi-final Exmouth faced a Sidmouth side missing one player on Devon duty whilst the Maer men were shorn of no fewer than five regular 1st XI players, also on duty for the County side in Herefordshire on the same day!

Sidmouth batted first in the final and posted what looked a match winning total of 176-2.

However, Exmouth opener Andy Buzza and Gary Chappell gave their side a lightning start as they chalked up fifty before the first four overs had been bowled.

Then a silly run-out saw the end of Buzza and three further batsmen came and went for the addition of just one more run.

However, the mercurial Chappell was still there and he was confidently looking to take a run off every ball faced whilst punishing the bad delivery, launching them into the adjoining fields at Knightshayes.
