EXMOUTH remain undefeated after the first month of the Francis Clark Devon League campaign following a draw with Alphington.

The Exeter side had begun the day bottom of the A Division table, at the opposite end to the high fliers of the Maer ground, but will probably have been the happier of the sides at stumps as they claimed nine points from a losing draw and climbed off the foot of the table in the process.

Exmouth batted first and found it hard going, missing out on the fifth and final batting point by just nine runs, closing on 191-6.

Greg Doyle provided the top score of 42 as he and Stuart Rintoul (34) put on 38 at the top of the order.

Other runs, scored in conditions not suited to batting, came from Andy Buzza (33), Chris Metters (18) - the pair adding 52 for the fifth wicket - and David Lye, who hit 22.

It was off-spin that did much of the damage for the home side.

The Alphas got off to a great start in the run chase and were well set approaching 50 without loss. Exmouth skipper Richard Baggs decided to bring himself on to bowl and he immediately slowed proceedings down, bowling his 13 overs for a miserly 31, whilst also picking up three wickets.

There was also a three wicket haul for Chris Metters (3-56) as the Alphington innings closed on175-8.

With Heathcoat winning for the fourth time in five outings - the only game the Mid Devon side have failed to win was the recent draw at the Maer ground - it leaves Exmouth top by four points from the Knightshayes men who have 84 points with Torquay in third on 73 points.

This weekend Baggs takes his team to third bottom Abbotskerswell and, at stumps on Saturday they will have completed one third of their season.
