Bob Dawson served up an outstanding all-round performance as Budleigh secured a resounding five wicket win with almost half a dozen overs still to play with at Paignton.

The hosts batted first and were bowled out I the final one of their fifty overs for 214. James Burke (1-29), Stuart Barlow (3-45), James Hudson (2-44) and Bob Dawson (3-8), the latter’s haul coming from 15 overs, were the wicket takers.

There was some impressive ground fielding from Budleigh with five catches being held, two claimed by wicket keeper Sandy Allen.

The reply got the perfect start with skipper Allen and Dawson putting on 80 before Allen was caught for 31. James Burke then joined Dawson and the Devon duo added 75 and, from 155-2 it was a mere stroll for the powerful Budleigh batting line-up to seal a comfortable, and comprehensive, victory.

Dawson ended with 88 and Burke’s contribution was 65.

The other wickets to fall, were James Hudson, who fell on five whilst Lloyd Murrin was bowled for seven, the only Budleigh batsman to be dismissed in this fashion, the other four wickets all fell, to catches!

A third win of the campaign for the Ottermouth men who banked a maximum points haul and move into fifth place on 69 points.

They are just three short of Exmouth and four off second paced Sidmouth whilst leaders North Devon are a mere 16 points clear.

This weekend marks the completion of the first third of the league season and it sees Budleigh make the short trip to Sidmouth for what looks, certainly on paper, as a mouth-watering game, not to be missed by the avid cricket follower!

A win at Forcefield and Budleigh would then have to be considered very much as title contenders in what looks set to be one of the closest title races for many seasons after recent years of Sidmouth domination in terms of the top honour.

Budleigh will face Plympton away on Sunday June 16 in the last eight of the Devon Senior Cup after Plympton impressively chassed down a total of 308 to win in the final over at another top flight club, Bradninch, on Sunday afternoon.
