Topsham St James Under-15s went down by seven wickets in a Bradleys East Devon Youth League meeting with Sandford, writes Mike Davison.
The Saints, with three new players in their ranks, were invited to bat on a good batting track, but slow outfield due to the heavy overnight rain.
The innings got off to the worst possible start with the loss of their first two wickets (both run out), without a single run on the board!
However, against a tight bowling attack Dean Pym (28) and Callum Davison (29no) set about building a decent total that saw the innings close on 72-6.
The Saints made an early breakthrough in the first over when Matt Pring had one of the Sandford openers caught at the wicket by Tom Veale.
However, despite further wickets falling to Pym and Jay Warren, a robust unbeaten 43 from Archie Osbourne saw the hosts safety past the target with ten overs still to bowl.
