Budleigh Salterton face the prospect of being unable to stage their opening Tolchards Devon League home game on Saturday owing to the condition of the Ottermouth ground outfield, writes Steve Birley.

The square at Budleigh is fine, but there are big concerns, indeed problems, with the outfield with a number of areas being particularly boggy.

Budleigh are due to entertain Bradninch and both sides are extremely keen to play, even more so after both lost their opening Tolchards League fixtures to last weekends soggy Saturday!

Budleigh skipper Lloyd White says: “It’s devastating for us. I have been in touch with Bradninch skipper Dan (Dan Hardy) and let him know how serious the matter is. As at 6pm on Thursday there is no way any umpire would agree to play given the state of our outfield, and that’s not just in one or two places either! There is significant waterlogging in areas which, despite umpteen man hours of work, simply are not drying out. We are desperate to play – as I know Bradninch are - but unless we can fined an alternative venue – which at this stage of the week seems highly unlikely – then we’ll miss another league game.”

With the Tolchards Devon League comprising of 18 match days, for both Budleigh and Bradninch to sit out another Saturday, especially one that it seems will provide weather suitable for cricket, is unthinkable.

The Ottermouth ground has suffered some extraordinary flooding in recent years with, on at least three occasions, the clubhouse has been totally submerged!

White said: “Hand on heart there is no way that Ottermouth is going to be fit for action. I have suggested that Bradninch send someone to see the seriousness of our situation for I’d hate to think anyone was of the opinion that we were up to something untoward! The season is a short one and for both ourselves and Bradninch to have to sit out match days one and two really would be a massive blow. That said, perhaps someone out there can help us.”

Anyone who might be able to help is asked to contact Lloyd White on 07527 362995.
