A classic English cricketing afternoon, location and clubhouse greeted Budleigh Salterton 2nd X1 up at Abbotskerswell last Saturday.
The Ottermouth men won the toss and decided to take up the bat first on the hard, slightly sloping Abbotskerswell’s wicket.
Openers James Leat and Lloyd White looked steady from the first ball, playing conservatively to the accurate attack of the home seamers whilst opening their shoulders to the bad deliveries finding the boundaries fairly easily!
White was majestic, striking a sweet 70 before departing to a delivery that kept very low.
Leat finally joined his opening partner back in the pavilion for a well-crafted 53 at which point the Otters were 142-2.
Dan Messom (46) and captain Ben Carter (49) continued to increase the tempo. Carter launching two successive sixes into the farmer’s field across the main road. The middle order failed to add too many more and the innings closed on a very healthy 253-5.
The home openers started solidly against Budleigh’s openers James Plowman (seam) and Joe Gore (spin).
Gore claimed a brace of wickets whilst Plowman kept the batsmen well contained with steady accurate pacey deliveries.
At 198-7 the hosts were very much in the contest Phil Yolland was introduced into the attack and a superb spell of six overs saw him claim the last four wickets for 36 runs to bowl the Abbots out for 236 and leave Budleigh winners by 17 runs!

On Saturday the second half of the season begins with Budleigh hosting Stoke Gabriel when a tenth win in as many outing will surely see their current 25-point lead over second placed Ottery St Mary further increased.
