Budleigh Cricket Club have a busy pre-season schedule in place, writes Steve Birley.

New skipper Lloyd White has been working hard to ensure his side are fully prepared for another Francis Clark Devon League A Division season.

The Ottermouth men are already back indoor netting at Exmouth Community College and they start outdoor nets in early April with twice weekly sessions before the first real action.

That opening game is an in-house 1st XI versus 2nd XI contest taking place at Ottermouth on Saturday, April 18. The weekend before the opening league matches, April 25 and 26 sees the Budleigh 1st XI play a weekend double-header with a Saturday visit to Exmouth followed 24-hours later with an Ottermouth match against Sidmouth. Also on April 26 the 2nd Xi travel to Bovey Tracey II for their final warm-up match.

In terms of the playing side Rob Craze has once again committed himself to the cause. The Exeter University 1st XI vice-captain, who bats in the top order and bowls tight off-spin, only managed five matches last season, but has said he is available for every game this coming campaign. Former Devon all-rounder Robbie Newman has returned to the area and is also on board. However his availability will be mixed due to school teaching commitments.

White says: “Having the two Rob’s on board is a huge boost. Both will be crucial in the middle overs and will probably find themselves bowling together a lot of the time. Robbie’s experience will be invaluable to our side and it’s great to have him back. We will be a youngish side this year, but there is no doubt in my mind we will compete. Last year we caused upsets in the Twenty20 Cup by beating Sidmouth and Heathcoat before losing to eventual winners Exmouth in the final. We did this without Ben Phillips and James Burke, who have both moved on this season. I wish them both well in their future adventures.”

With regard to other player recruitment the Budleigh skipper says: “We are talking to a few players who would really strengthen the clubs senior sides, but all in all the side is shaping well and have more than enough depth to ensure we are at the top end of the table come August. We all can’t wait to get going here at Ottermouth and welcome any new faces, of any age at the training sessions.”

The nest pre-season net is this Sunday (February 15) at Exmouth Community College from 11am to 1pm and any prospective new players will be made most welcome. Contact Lloyd White on 07515 155091 for more information.
