Budleigh claimed an outstanding victory as they became the first team to inflict defeat on back to back Francis Clark Devon League champions, Sidmouth on Saturday.

The Ottermouth men went into the game in good spirit after claiming their first success of the campaign the previous week when a Joel Murphy insured performance saw them win by nine wickets at Braunton.

They were also boosted by the presence of new signing, Pakistani Hammad Azam, who had turned out for his country in the last under-19 World Cup.

Budleigh batted first and scored what seemed a below par 198-9 on another glorious Ottermouth wicket. New man Azam showed his class with a stylish 61, Murphy (37) and Bob Dawson (35), provided the main support innings.

However, any fears at tea that the home total would not be sufficient were quickly extinguished as Sidmouth were humbled for 127 with Azam claiming a debut fivefer to finish with 5-36. Dawson completed another fine afternoon’s work with 2-5 and Budleigh won by 61 runs to chalk up a second successive success.

The win lifts the Ottermouth men to seventh and they are just 24 points shy of fourth placed Plympton. Next up they travel to second from bottom Exeter who had a losing draw in a high scoring game at North Devon on Saturday.
