Budleigh 2nds began the second half of the Francis Clark League season as they ended the first, as emphatic winners!

Visiting Stoke Gabriel II lost the toss and were subjected to a spell under the sizzling sun at Ottermouth.

However, home skipper Ben Carter’s decision to bat first looked to have back-fired with both openers Leat and Messom back in the pavilion inside three overs!

Richardson (acclimatised to the heat after a week in Magaluf) looked very comfortable until holing out on 31 and, when the skipper fell in the following over, Budleigh were 45-4 and certainly ‘feeling the heat’!

It was the middle order that got the home innings back on track as England and Marley both stroked half centuries.

There were late cameo’s from Yolland (38), Mills (16) and Murphy (11) as Budleigh closed on what looked a competitive total of 235.

Stoke Gabriel’s batters started solidly against opening bowlers Jones and Mills, although they soon fell behind the required run rate.

The break through came via Mills (1 for 29), with the score on 56. Spin twins Marley and Richardson were then introduced into the attack; Richardson, bowling from the pavilion end, produced a ‘match-winning’ nine over spell (5 for 30) at the end of which the visitors were 110 for seven and the game effectively over!

Murphy (1-26) and Gore (3-16) were introduced at the end to mop up the tail and ensure that Budleigh once again achieved maximum points.

It’s now a clean sweep of played ten, won ten for table topping Budleigh II who now have 193 points.

Ottery St Mary II sit second with 167 with Sidmouth III on 157.

On Saturday a win at basement side Braunton II will push Budleigh ever nearer a swift return to the A Division.
