Sandy Allen was the star of the show as Exmouth claimed an eighth win of the Tolchards Devon League top flight season, beating relegation-threatened Paignton by two wickets.
The home side batted first and made a respectable 210. The pick of the Maer men’s bowlers was Trevor Anning.
The county seamer has a groin problem and so was unable to send the ball down at his usual pace, so opted for some more casual off-spin and promptly claimed four wickets for 35 runs from a full shift of 10 overs!
Alvin Pollard also claimed a four wicket haul and finished with the excellent figures of 4-30 from seven overs.
The Exmouth reply was hit by a most rare cricketing occurrence - a Gary Chappell golden duck! The Exmouth skipper was trapped leg before to the very first delivery he received.
Sandy Allen Allen then took centre stage of the run chase for, after the early loss of fellow opener Chappell he also lost Dan Pyle (18), Trevor Anning (10) and Bob Dawson (14) before he was fifth man out with the score on 152. Allen had been at the wicket for 130 minutes, faced 103 deliveries and hit ten fours. He trooped off with 84 to his name and the next best in a successful run chase was the unbeaten 27 from number eight bat Marques Clarke.
Ollie Dawe was the other not out batsman as the victory was confirmed with four overs and three balls remaining.
There are just four more matches in the league season for the Maer men who this Saturday host Bovey Tracey.
They head into the game sitting fifth in the table with 182 points. Bovey will pitch up sitting fourth on 197 points.
