Exe Sailing Club’s Ben Cornish has made a flying start to the new season.
He landed success in the qualifying series of races held at Hayling Island, Portsmouth where he was looking to bag a berth in the Laser class Worlds which are being staged in Oman in August of this year.
Conditions were far from ideal with a big swell and strong winds.
After a weekend of six races Cornish returned an outstanding card showing a first, a second and three third place finishes. After discarding his lowest finish he was able to claim a dozen points and that was sufficient to place him first!
The first place also sees him now five points clear of his nearest rival with two more qualifying races to be staged.
Cornish has big race meetings on the horizon as he is set to compete at Hyeres in France, followed by Lake Garda before an event at Medemblik in Holland.
Between these fixtures come the other two qualifiers which are being held in Pwhelli and Whitstable.
There’s plenty of travelling ahead, and hopefully plenty more glory, for a very talented young sailor.
