Comets bagged an Exmouth Netball League ‘double’ with wins over Cougars and Kenn Valley.

First up was the meeting with Cougars and both sides were quick to settle into the contest with their respective shooters; Cara Monaghan and Katie Tyrell for Comets and Isla Smith and Tia Hiscox for Cougars, working well together in their respective ends and, at the end of the first quarter, Comets held a six goal lead.

The second quarter saw Comets begin to exert their authority. A key to their dominance was the centre court play of Alexis Bush, Gill Hall and Bryony Monaghan while the defensive pairing of Annabel Russell and Yvonne Sparkes, restricted the opposition’s goal scoring opportunities and half-time arrived with Comets leading 34-19.

There was little change to the flow of the game through the third quarter with the score climbing to 52-27, though Cougars, with centre court trio Grace Burley, Tess Findel-Hawkins and Sam Bradshaw along with defensive duo Kat Jackson and Shelly Stammers, working hard, enjoyed some good passages of play, but they were unable to net the goals that their approach play deserved.

In the final quarter the action was more evenly match with Cougars scoring seven further goals to the 10 scored by Comets, who ended as 62-33 winners.

The respective Player of the Match award winners were Cara Monaghan for Comets and Isla Smith for Cougars.

Comets claimed an even more emphatic success as they beat league newcomers Kenn Valley 76-24. With Kenn Valley still coming to terms with the pace of the league, they found life difficult against the established force that Comets undoubtedly are

Comets led 21-6 at the end of the first quarter and their dominance continued through to half-time.

Cara Monaghan, shooting for Comets, was unstoppable and on the defensive wing, her daughter Bryony picked out any misplaced pass by Kenn to provide turnover ball to the advantage of the Comets.

Both teams made some positional changes for the third quarter, Cheryl Haddy moving to goal shooter for Kenn Valley and this was by far their best quarter, matching Comets goal for goal, scoring a dozen goals to the 13 netted by Comets.

Kenn Valley centre court trio Katie Dean, Becky Stratton Bowery and Claire Hanniford worked hard throughout, but the power of Comets was clear throughout.

Bryony Monaghan showed her versatility by playing wing defence, goal attack and goal shooter during the game and was deservedly awarded the player of the match honour for Comets and Cheryl Haddy, who moved up to goal shooter from goal keeper, for Kenn Valley, was named their player of the match.
