The Exmouth netball league season has reached the half way stage and, fittingly, the Comets and Bicton meeting turned out to be a real thriller, writes Louise Passmore.
Comets 39:38 Bicton
The two teams took the court knowing that a win was imperative to keep pace with table topping Wasps.
Comets were quickly into their stride and raced into a four goal lead. Bicton then responded with some fine defence and exceptional passing through the centre court. The first quarter ended with Comets holding a single goal advantage.
The second quarter produced the best period of play in the contest. Cath Holt and Kate Pilkington in the centre court area, drove the ball forward to the attack at their respective ends. Shooters Cara Monahan and Pamela Taylor for Comets and Sandra Wood and Lorraine Browring for Bicton, converted shooting chances into goals but they had to work hard against tight defending from Catherine Kilburn and Jo McKenzie for Bicton and Alexis Heal and Yvonne Sparkes for Comets.
Still holding a one goal lead into the start of the third quarter, Comets found a new gear and, during a five minute purple patch, moved into a five goal lead with much of the new impetuous stemming from the performance of Hayley Taylor at wing defence making the centre court patch her domain!
The pressure began to mount and a combination of Comets missing chances to put the game away and Bicton continually picking up loose passes prior to applying a clinical finish the final quarter was reached with Comets once more juts a single goal ahead.
During the closing stages Gill Hall became pivotal as wing attack for Comets as they took a three goal lead, but back came Bicton and, when the final whistle blew, that one goal margin remained, in favour of Comets.
