Comets impress against battling Bicton

COMETS claimed a superb five goal victory when they beat Bicton, writes Louise Passmore.

What made the 41-36 victory all the more impressive was that Comets went into the contest beset by injury and illness, and opponents, Bicton, took to the court with two substitutes and their coach on the sidelines.

A last minute signing enabled Comets to field a full side, but it was Bicton who took advantage of a couple of missed centre passes by Comets, as they settled into the new team format, to forge into a five goal lead by the end of the first quarter.

A positional change on Comets centre court after quarter time took a while to be effective.

Amelia Thorpe and Lorraine Bowring, shooting for Bicton, were on top form and it was the superb defending of Annabel Russell, Yvonne Sparks and Alexis Heal that helped keep Bicton from gaining an unassailable lead whilst the Comets attack sorted itself out.

Comets were determined not to be beaten and, although eight goals down by half time, they began the third quarter in decisive form, whilst Bicton had made a half time substitution.

Right from the start of the quarter, wing attack Kate Pilkington and Gill Hall, at centre, made crucial interceptions and set Comets on the attack and with the still focussed defence the eight goal deficit quickly fell away.

Cara Moynahan and Pamela Taylor shooting for Comets at last found space and form to score from very nearly every chance presented to them, despite tight defending by Rachael Cotton at goal keeper and Sally Eade, playing her first game at goal defence. At three quarter time ,Comets held a very tenuous three goal lead.

Bicton made a further substitution bringing on goal shooter Annette Lord for Lorraine Bowring.

With each team scoring in turn and Bicton on the attack, Yvonne Sparks picked up a wayward pass and, looking up to see Pamela Taylor standing alone in the Comets circle, let loose a pin-point pass nearly two thirds of the court that fell into Taylor’s hand and she calmly netted the goal and there was still time for one last score as Comets sealed a 41-36 success.

The Players of the Match were, Alexis Heal for Comets and Amelia Thorpe for Bicton.
