Having put in an excellent team performance the previous week, Exe travelled with high hopes for their South West Premier One fixture.
Bristol University 2–1 Exe II
However, it turned into a most frustrating encounter for the side who dominated the opening third of the contest but fell behind to a breakaway goal in the 10th minute.
Despite several strikes at goal from Laura Allen, Sarah Williams and Meg Pearson, among others, the Bristol keeper was on top form and the score line remained one nil at half time.
Exe stepped up the intensity in the second half and the hosts struggled with the pressure that they were being put under.
The deserved equaliser arrived from Molly Coleman, just reward for Exe’s persistence and pressure.
The ball was hit into the D and Coleman got in front of her opponent to get her stick to the ball and send it sailing into the far top corner of the goal.
From then on it was nip and tuck with both teams trying for the win without wanting to concede.
Not for the first time this term, the decisive goal arrived in the closing stages with this one coming from a penalty corner, to consign Exe to a narrow 2-1 defeat.
Exe have their last game before the Christmas break this weekend against Swindon at St Luke’s School (11am).
