Clyst St George 2nds were involved in a thrilling F Division East game when they visited Bradninch 2nds.
Batting first after skipper Matt Knight won the toss, Richard Coe and Harry O’Dwyer put on 27 before Coe fell to a catch for 19. Simon Burrell, making his first appearance for the Bohea Field men since his switch from Alphington, joined O’Dwyer and they began to get the scoring rate moving, adding 99 before Burrell was bowled for a 52-ball stay at the crease that saw him hit six fours and one six in a knock of 44.
Young O’Dwyer was the third man down, but not before he had faced 86 balls, hitting seven fours and one six in a knock that saw him score 61.
Tim Read slammed a dozen ball 23 and George O’Dwyer chipped in with 21 as Clyst St George closed on 215-7 from their 40 overs.
When Bradninch replied, the new ball duties were given to George O’Dwyer and Sophie Florides and the latter struck in her very first over, sending back Devon Over-50s player Paul Nott for a duck.
The home second wicket partnership saw a century partnership before Kevin Coe somehow held a powerfully driven shot by Chris Acton who was sent back having faced 72 deliveries for his 10 boundary innings of 48.
Will Birley was joined by Connor Carthew, but Dan Takle trapped him leg before for three and, when Birley fell to a catch behind by George O’Dwyer off Takle – the teenager had scored 70 with eight fours and two sixes from a 64-ball stay at the wicket - Bradninch were 149-4, still requiring 66 runs to win the game at around eight runs an over. However, despite the best efforts of the Clyst St George bowlers – Derrick Foan (22no) and Tom Porter (27 from 14 deliveries), put bat to ball to great effect to see Bradninch to a four wicket win with just nine deliveries of the contest remaining.
Dan Takle finished with figures of 3-57 from a full stint of eight overs and there were fine spells from the opening pair of George O’Dwyer, who had figures of 0-22 from eight and Sophie Florides, who bowled exceptionally well in two spells from opposite ends to return figures of 2-35 from eight overs.
Despite the defeat Clyst St George remain second behind table-topping Sidmouth III and this Saturday (June 9) they can strengthen their hold on one of the three promotion berths when they entertain basement dwellers Shobrooke Park 2nds.
