LAST week proved to be a winning one for the Budleigh men with victory over Ottery St. Mary in the County Trophy, writes Paul Griffin.

In the County Trophy match, Budleigh recorded victories on both of the home rinks and one of the away rinks to win with an overall score of 92-59. At home the rink of Tony Dealler, Ralph Lawson, Archie Autton and skip Alban Chase were in top form and led 18-0 after eight ends before going on to win 30-11.

The other home rink of Paul Griffin, Mike Reader, Gerry Roberts and skip Ron Tyler had a tougher fight, but recovered from 10-5 down after nine ends to win 24-22.

The pattern was repeated on the away rinks with Budleigh's foursome of Jeff Rigg, Tony Lim, John Dill and skip Bob Rivers going into an 8-0 lead after five ends before remaining in control throughout, winning 21-8.

It could have been a maximum point's victory for Budleigh, but, with the score tied at 17-17 all on the penultimate end, Harry Vanstone's rink of John Vanstone, Brian Alabaster and Tony Stone drop a shot on the last end to lose narrowly 18-17.
