Budleigh Salterton Veterans Reds just missed out on a semi-final spot in the Devon Vets League after a 3-2 defeat to Plymouth side Drakes Drum.
Budleigh finished top of their league table with a 100% record after the group matches, joining Drakes Drum, Elburton Villa, Okehampton Argyle, Otterton, Plymouth Phoenix, Plymouth United and Sidmouth Town, as one of the Super Eight contesting the knock-out stage.
On a pleasant evening, those watching were treated to some good football from both sides, with Budleigh taking a 12th minute lead through Danny Williams, but it was all square on 25 minutes. The home advantage was regained by the impressive Sam Goodin for a half-time score of 2-1.
The second period saw the visitors’ best passage of play and a defensive mix-up gave them a 76th minute equalizer. Both sides gave everything in the closing stages before a penalty for Drakes gave them a place in the last four.
