Budleigh suffer big blow in defeat to Plympton

Budleigh Salterton’s hopes of building on their 10-wicket win over Chudleigh were shattered when they dipped to a 17-run defeat at Plympton, writes Conrad Sutclffe.
Plympton’s 50-over total of 183 for nine looked a little vulnerable when Budleigh were 127 for four in reply with 19 overs to go.
Four wickets fell in a hurry – James Degg picked up a couple – and despite the best efforts of Phil Anning to save the game for Budleigh it wasn’t to be.
Defeat leaves Budleigh third from bottom, just two points clear of the relegation places.
Opener David Ackord (20) made early runs for Plympton, then Justin Wubbeling (25) and Elliot Hamilton (58no) kept the middle order ticking over.

Budleigh skipper Trevor Anning (3-14) led his side’s bowling effort, aided and abetted by Lloyd Murrin (3-35).
All the Budleigh bowlers with one exception – wide-plagued Luke Jefferson – went for less than four an over.

Plympton also had trouble pitching it between the lines and gave away 24 wides in a total of 46 extras, which compensated Budleigh for lack of runs off the bat.
Lee Ahmed (3-32) got into the top order, then Degg (4-20) scattered the middle order.
Phil Anning (37) and Murrin (25) kept Budleigh in with a shout and shifting the latter was the most likely way Plympton were going to win.
Degg snared Anning lbw, which left last pair James Doble and Joel Murphy to make 37 to win. Plympton skipper Craig Donohue (2-30) settled any doubt by dismissing Murphy at 166.
Budleigh are at home to Bideford this Saturday.
