Budleigh quartet bowl to victory in the Redfern Trophy at Ottery St Mary

The past week was a successful one for the Budleigh bowlers as the Redfern Trophy was won at Ottery and a team finished as joint runners-up in the Sidmouth Jubilee Trophy meeting, writes David Roberts.
With Bill Barber, Ann Vincent, Gerry Roberts and Bobbie Vanstone winning at Ottery with a plus 13 score; this was a great result for the club.
Hot on their heels was the rink of Brian Ward, Peter Hillman, Brian Goddard and Gerry Roberts, who were joint runners-up in the Sidmouth Jubilee Trophy with a plus seven score. Congratulations, to both teams for excellent performances.
A mixed friendly away to near neighbours Phear Park saw a 60-55 win for Budleigh. Best of the Budleigh rinks was that of Reg Ringsell, Bill Barber and Margaret Ringsell (21-11), whilst Tony Lim, Peter Cooper and Brian Ward, also won well (17-9). Tony Barnes, Hilary Medley and Gerry Roberts came from behind scoring three shots on the last end to win 15-14.
However, at home to Honiton, it was a different story with the visitors winning 79-47, but there were creditable draws for the rinks of Melissa Camp, Mike Shaw, Bill Barber and Hilary Medley, Peter Hillman and Bobbie Vanstone, who both achieved 16-16 draws.
A trip to Sidmouth for the Spear Trophy saw a ladies team of Marilyn Jackson, Gwen Hurst, Anne Goddard and Bobbie Vanstone start well, but were unable to make an impact whilst Joan Shaw led a ladies team of Hilary Medley, Marion Lacey and Bunty Hudson to Exonia in the Barlow Trophy without success.
In the Ladies Over-50s Triples League, against Seaton, there was a 16-13 win for Ann Vincent, Bunty Hudson and Mo Bond, securing two points, as the overall score ended 26-36.
In club competitions, Ralph Cartwright progressed to the final of the Novice Cup whilst Andrew Cardy won his first round match in the Club Championship and Peter Cooper booked semi-final places in the Handicap singles and the Championship. Gerry Roberts and Brian Summers have progressed to the semi-final of the two-wood. In the ladies’, Margaret Ringsell is through to the semi-final of the three wood and Joan Shaw the final of the two-wood.
