Budleigh Men in epic Sidmouth League success

The Budleigh club has for some time now supported the Sidmouth Evening League, which is always a competitive and well-organised competition, so it is always good to record a win for the Budleigh bowlers, writes David Roberts.
This particular success really was an exceptional one with Budleigh defeating Sidmouth Matadors 13-12.
In what was an incredibly tight and competitive match, with only 25 points scored over 21 ends, the Budleigh foursome of Bill Barber, Gerard McCarthy, Terry Escott and skip Leighton Burston were 11-6 down after 14 ends, but hit a purple patch winning the last six of the remaining seven ends to tie the score 12-12 going into the final end.
With the Sidmouth Matadors holding shot to win the game, the Budleigh skip Leighton removed it with a controlled weighted shot to take the game in style to start the celebrations.
The men took on a strong Torquay United team in the Over-60s League and whilst losing overall, 81-100, there was an impressive away win for the rink of Richard Cooper, Tony Lim, Brian Summers and skip John Dill, 28-19. At home, David Tomlinson skipped Derek Stanley, Mike Killoran and Bill Barber to a great 21-19 success, whilst Peter Cooper, Mike Shaw, Paul Griffin and Brian Goddard were unlucky to lose out 19-24.
In a mixed home friendly match against Chardstock there was an overall loss 30-38 for the Budleigh team on both rinks. The best of the home team was the rink of Marilyn Lacey, Mike Shaw, Mike Killoran and Joan Shaw who played well, but just lost out 17-16.
The ladies entertained Axminster at home and, whilst the rink of Ann Vincent, Gwen Hurst, Lilian Grainger and Dawn Graham had a good win 19-13, it was not enough to prevent an overall loss 33-51.
In the ladies’ Lane competition there was a disappointing defeat on all four rinks 43-76.
Gwen Hurst, Di Lowe and skip Joan Shaw put up the best performance but just lost out 12-13.
The Tuesday triples league saw wins for Team Willow (Lilian Grainger, Bob Gooch and Brian Evans, 18-14) and Team Elm (Mike Killoran, Mo Bond and Brian Summers, 15-13).
