LAST week proved to be very productive for Budleigh Men with a hat-trick of victories in various competitions, writes Paul Griffin.
In the Foxlands Trophy, a competition played with two rinks one of which is home and the other away, Budleigh progressed to the semi-finals with a fine 61-22 victory over Axminster.
In this match the home rink of Paul Griffin, Burgess Stace, Ron Tyler and skip Rod Davidson won 34-11 and the away rink of Tony Lim, Gerry Roberts, Archie Autton and skip John Dance won 27-11. Budleigh will now play Ottery St. Mary in the semi-final.
In the County Trophy, a competition played with four rinks, two home and two away, Budleigh narrowly beat Sidmouth by one shot, 69-68, with the rinks shared two all. In this match Budleigh were trailing by fourteen shots at the halfway stage before staging a strong comeback to gain three shots on the last end and win the match.
The winning home rink, who won 16-13, was skipped by John Dance with John Vanstone, G. Ellis, and Tony Stone and the victorious away rink, who won 18-14, was skipped by Ron Tyler with Paul Griffin, Ralph Cook and Mike Shaw.
In the Over 60’s Triple League Budleigh A gained another six points with a 34-27 victory over Starcross A with the rinks shared one each.
The winning triple in this match was skipped By John Dance with John Vanstone and Tony Stone.
During the week Budleigh entertained Phear Park in a four rink men’s friendly, and, to celebrate the ‘Parks’ one hundredth birthday, presented them with a cake when tea was taken at the halfway stage.
This proved to be the home sides downfall as they obviously eat too much cake and the Park went on to win the match, 78-76, with the rinks shared two all.
Phear Park’s best performing rink, who won 25-12, was skipped by David Evans with Jim Letten, Peter Burch and J. Anderson. Budleigh’s best rink, who won 22-16, was skipped by Terry Kelly with John Vanstone, Arthur Morgan and Gerry Roberts.
In a busy week of bowling Budleigh also entertained the Leicester and County Touring side in a six rink mixed friendly and won 112-101 with the rinks shared three all. In this match Budleigh’s rink with the highest winning margin was Tom Maidment, Lorna Autton, John Vanstone and skip Burgess Stace with a 27-10 victory
