Last Sunday, on a sunny bank holiday weekend, a very large gathering of friends, families plus a mixture of players who have previously represented the club, together with members of the present squad, converged on Budleigh Salterton Football Club, writes SpursTom.
They were there to remember Trevor Howarth, one of the greatest players and servants of the club, who sadly passed away about six years ago.
Two teams contested for the annual “TREVOR HOWARTH Cup” a veteran squad managed by Andy Bennett, and another managed by Scott Howarth.
The game was only a few minutes old when crowd were treated to an early goal, with Dan Boere giving the home (red shirted) Scott Howarth’s XI the lead, but the men in blue (away strip) upped their game, taking a 2-1 advantage into the break through two perfect strikes by Sam Woodin.
In the second period, the experience of the Andy Bennett’s team (many of whom will be part of a Budleigh Salterton Veteran Squad in the coming 2021-2022 season), increased their control on the game with Carl Everest & Dave Wilkes making it 4-1.
Teenager Will White reduced the deficit to 2-4, before Carl Everest completed the scoring for a 5-2 victory, in what was a very entertaining and well competitive affair.
There was a BBQ in progress, washed down with some cool beverages obtainable from the bar to help make the occasion a pleasurable time, something which would have pleased Trevor immensely.
