The Budleigh Evening League, sponsored by Coast Wealth Management, has been a tight affair for the top teams over recent weeks, but no one would have predicted that there would be a tie for top position, writes David Roberts.

Incredibly, there was nothing between the Maderia Bluebirds and the Exonia Eagles as rinks won, games won and bowls difference were all the same following completion of their fixtures.

The two clubs have agreed to share the prize money for first and second places, which is donated to a charity of their choice. Congratulations, to both teams.

Third place is still up for grabs, as the Maderia Robins still have to play the Budleigh Buzzards (scheduled for March 27) and will need to secure five of the six points on offer to displace the Budleigh Falcons, who have completed their fixtures and sit in third position.

In the Les Thwaite Shield, Exonia Eagles, Maderia Robins, Maderia Bluebirds and the Budleigh Falcons have all progressed to the semi-finals, which will be played this week, reflecting the success of these sides in the league this year as the Budleigh Buzzards and Hawks have struggled to stay in contention.

In Budleigh club matches, the ladies travelled to Maderia and came home with wins on all three rinks.

To be fair, the Maderia ladies did lend Budleigh three players, but nevertheless there were strong performances from the Budleigh ladies.

Margaret Avery, Ann Doidge, Lilian Grainger and Mo Bond enjoyed a convincing 27-14 success, while Marion Lacey, Annette Lockhart, Joan Cowing and Celia Mangeng again played well, winning 28-11.

To complete the overall success, Ann Vincent, Diana Cantor, Dianzee Lowe and skip Joan Shaw were victorious to the tune of a 20-15 score line.

All in all, it meant an overall Budleigh win by 35 shots. Many thanks must be recorded to Maderia for their hospitality and understanding.

In the coming week the Budleigh men play Vice Presidents’ matches at Sidmouth and at home to Honiton whilst the ladies entertain Mid Devon.

The Budleigh men also wrap up their Interclub season when they play top-of-the-league side South Hams.
