Budleigh bowlers fell to a heavy defeat in an Over-60s County Trophy meeting with Torbay.

IT WAS a week of mixed fortunes for the Budleigh bowlers, writes Paul Griffin.

The first match of the week, an Over-60s County Trophy Match, ended in a heavy 95-66 defeat for Budleigh at the hands of Torbay.

Both the away rinks lost but Alan Cottles home rink of Burge Stace, Paul Griffin and John Dill did savage some pride by winning their rink 23-13 but sadly, the other home rink also lost.

In the next match, a two rink friendly against Honiton, Budleigh were in better form, winning on both rinks and by 48-33 overall.

Gerry Robert’s rink of Wally Nickels, Janet Mitchell and Tony Lim led from start to finish to win 26-13 and Ron Tyler’s rink of John Vanstone, Margaret Avery and Dick Mitchell recovered from a 14-9 deficit after thirteen ends to record a 22-20 victory.

In the Symes Robinson and Lee sponsored Budleigh Evening League Exonia came from behind to beat the Budleigh Eagles on both rinks and by 37-31 overall.

Sidmouth scored a convincing 49-26, two rink, victory over the Budleigh Hawks. Madeira Red trailed the Budleigh Falcons 29-15 after thirteen ends but recovered to gain five shots on the last end and win by the narrowest of margins, 33-32, with the rinks shared.

The Budleigh Buzzards beat the Budleigh Hawks on both rinks and by 43-22 overall. In the final match of the week, a corker between Madeira Blue and Exonia, honours were even as the rinks were shared and the match drawn 33-33.

With a third of the season now completed The Budleigh Buzzards and Exonia lead the league table on the same number of points with Sidmouth in third place.
