From Monday, March 29, you can come and try your hand at croquet, at any time, any day, just give us a call.
Budleigh Salterton Croquet Club is open for Covid-safe croquet, where, even if you have never played before, you can come along and give it a try. There are so many reasons to come and enjoy croquet now, in your new found freedom.
Firstly, we have beautiful natural surroundings, fresh air and space. Our Club has twelve well-spaced lawns (one lawn being four times the size of a tennis court!) set amongst nature’s most majestic surroundings overlooking the sea and town, with mature trees, bushes and gardens.
There is a real sense of peace and a tranquillity, where you can only hear the breeze in the trees, the birds singing and the satisfying hit of a mallet against the ball, and on some days, even the sound of the sea.
Then there is the laughter too as friends play together. Your thoughts are only on playing this most addictive game. A lovely outdoor, green place to discover and enjoy a new sport.
Secondly, in what other games can men and women, young and old, play on equal terms?
Croquet is a sport for all ages and ideal for families too. Learning a new skill keeps your brain active as you begin to use tactics to outwit your opponent and try your best to keep them away from that hoop, whilst getting your own ball through.
Thirdly, it’s a social game and a social club. Croquet is played with a partner, either as singles or doubles against another partnership. We can all play and still remain socially distanced.
When allowed, we have roll ups where any member can turn up and be allocated a partner ad hoc to enjoy a fun game of croquet, usually rounded off with a piece of cake and a cup of tea, or something stronger from the bar if required.
We have a social calendar that has included in the past themed event meals, quiz nights, a casino evening, theatre evening and charity events.
We are a welcoming Club where you can make new friends and acquaintances. We can also play all-year round apart from in the most severe conditions. There is nothing lovelier than wrapping up warmly and joining friends for a great game of croquet in the soft winter sunshine - no need for those winter blues cooped up indoors.
If you like the sound of all that, then come and have a free, fun try at croquet. You have nothing to lose and plenty to gain. But there are even more reasons to enjoy croquet. It is a sport that can be played at any level from the casual, social get together, to the highly skilled competitive play on the world stage -and everything in between.
Budleigh hosts national, international and world class tournaments and we encourage beginners with tutored events. There is league play for beginners, intermediate and advanced players, should you be interested.
Coaching is freely provided and we also have club competitions and tournaments for all abilities, so that you can enjoy the excitement of competitive play. Budleigh offers several forms of croquet and some members enjoy them all, whilst others concentrate on one format. It’s always up to you.
There really is something for everyone.
We invite you to get in touch to arrange a personal visit. Bring a friend and discover the joys of croquet in a large open space, surrounded with beauty and fresh air.
