Budleigh Salterton Cricket Club AGM held last Thursday, commenced with two minutes silence to remember the clubs former players who had died in the First and Second World Wars.
On behalf of the club, former club chairman Kevin Curran had laid a wreath in their memory at the towns recent Armistice Day Remembrance Service.
Addressing members, club chairman Greg Evans spoke of the successful past cricket season which had once again seen the club add to its trophy cabinet.
The chairman thanked club secretary Sean Mills for all his hard work and in particular for spearheading The Chance to Shine project which had involved 90 children from our three local Primary Schools and also the ECB All Stars Cricket initiative, both being most valuable in enhancing the clubs community related involvement.
The clubs Community Cricket League was also once again enthusiastically supported. Ladies cricket activities were not neglected and the chairman outlined his ambition to grow further this side of the club in 2019 and beyond.
The committee acknowledged that at senior level the lack of an overseas professional had disadvantaged the first team when playing against most other A Division sides.
The chairman advised members that steps had therefore already been taken to ensure a professional overseas player would be in situ for the 2019 season.
Lloyd Murrin was elected first team captain for 2019 with Dan Messom elected as the second team captain.
An important part of the meeting comprised an update to members on The Lower Otter Restoration Project.
Funding for the possible relocation of the cricket club is dependent upon the delivery of this major project.
The briefing advised that Clinton Devon Estates as landowners and partners in the LORP were now progressing a planning application to East Devon District Council for a potential new home for the club on the edge of the town along the East Budleigh road.
The briefing emphasised the final outcome of the project still depends on technical studies, funding and planning applications.
Members regarded this a most encouraging and if successful it appears work could start on the new ground later next year which would likely lead to cricket being on the new ground in the 2022 season.
Following the formal close of the AGM, senior club awards were presented as follows :- 1st XI batting award - Trevor Anning; 1st XI bowling (this had joint winners) Trevor Anning and Ed Doble; 1st XI Players’ Player - Ed Doble; 2nd XI batting award - Donavan Robinson; 2nd XI bowling award - Matt Murphy; 2nd XI Players’ Player - Matt Murphy; Peter Preston-Jones Cup winner – Ed Doble; The Baker Meritorious Trophy - John Littler.
