The long-awaited return to bowling at Cricket Field Lane arrived on Saturday, as Budleigh Salterton Bowls Club finally got back into action.
Throughout the day, 33 enthusiastic bowlers took to the green for two round-robin competitions.
The players were blessed with wall-to-wall sunshine, although there was still a cool breeze to keep the bowlers moving, but with a superb surface at their feet, the bowlers soon found their skills and were back to their competitive ways as if they had never been away.
Congratulations to the winners of the morning session, who were Hilary Medley, Ralph Cartwright and Paul Griffin, as they just pipped runners-up Melissa Camp, Graham Rant and Bob Gooch.
The afternoon session saw Tony Lim, Norman Upchurch and Penny Weeks impress, ending the day undefeated to take first place, with Gwen Hurst, Gordon Marshall and Brian Ward rallying from a first match defeat to secure runners-up.
Roll-ups started in earnest this week on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at 10am and, whilst competitive matches against other clubs will not start for a few weeks, the club is gearing itself for an enjoyable start to the season.
Budleigh Salterton Bowls Club formed in 1903 and is one of the oldest clubs in Devon, based in a beautiful area and part of an overall club that also includes Tennis and Bridge sections.
The club has six outdoor rinks plus two indoor rinks, a clubhouse with changing rooms, modern kitchen facilities, bar and function rooms where social, Bridge and Mah Jong activities are held. A large free car parking area is provided on the club grounds.
Now is the time for outside activity, so if any readers are interested in trying their hand at bowls, we would love to see them at the club.
Bowls is an incredibly accessible sport, easy to learn the rules and provides a superb social environment, while also retaining the competitive element that gets the juices flowing, no matter your age, ability or previous experience.
