BUDLEIGH entertained the Gloucester Vice Presidents touring side to a six rink men's and three rink women's friendly and won both matches, writes Paul Griffin.Against the men, Budleigh won five of the six rinks contested and by 126-90 overall, with the best performing rinks being Sid Cole, Bernard Brace, Alan Pearson and skip Rod Davidson, who won 27-12, and Bob River's rink of Peter Norman, Gordon Smith and Cliff Waycott with a 24-12 victory.The Ladies match was a closer affair with the rinks being shared one each with one tied but overall Budleigh won 48-41. In this match the winning Budleigh rink was skipped by Jean Coates with Lorna Autton, Janice Brace and Jean Watts who had a good 22-10 victory.Budleigh played hosts to fellow Devon side Babbacombe in a six rink mixed triples and won convincingly by 116 shots to 73, winning on five rinks in the process. Ann Cottle's triple of Wally Nickels and Pat Harvey had a fine 26-9 win and Celia Mangeng's triple of Terry Fitzgerald and Tony Dealler lead all the way in winning 26-12.In the County Trophy, despite winning on three of the four rinks contested, Budleigh lost 81-71 to Sidmouth. Both Budleigh's home rinks recorded victories with the foursome of Archie Autton, Tony Stone, Allan Cottle and skip John Dance putting in a strong finish to win 25-20 and Harry Vanstone's rink of Bert Mangeng, Mike Shaw and Brian Lofts recovering from 16-10 down after sixteen ends to gain four shots on the last end to win a tight game 19-18. Budleigh's away rink of Don Huish, John Vanstone, Ralph Lawson and skip Gerry Roberts also scored a narrow 16-14 victory, but the other away rink suffered a heavy 34-11 defeat.In the Over 60's League the three Budleigh teams again shared the rinks in their respective matches but ended up losing two and winning one. The victory came in Budleigh's B match against Crediton's B by the narrowest of margins, one shot, 38 to 37. Harry Vanstone's triple of Wally Nickels and Tony Lim gained seven shots on the thirteenth end on their way to a 21-16 win. Against Pinces A, Budleigh A lost 41-25, but in this match Allan Cottle's triple of John Dill and Archie Autton put in a strong finish to score four shots without reply on the last three ends to win their rink 17-16. The Budleigh C team went down 37-33 to Pinces C with Sid Cole's triple of Trevor Smith and Alf Wallen winning their particularrink match by a score of 16-12.
