IN THE first round of the Interclub, Budleigh were drawn against South Molton and Culm Vale was the venue, as a neutral green was required, writes Pat Pearson.

Only eight players were involved in this ‘double rink’ event and it was a job well done by the team as Budleigh were successful on both rinks.

Dianzee Lowe (skip), with Angie Fish, Diane Dixon and Joan Shaw, took an early lead and kept up the shots, scoring four on the 13th end to be 14-5 ahead and following on to a great 23-8 win.

For skip Jean Coates on the other rink, with Margaret Ratcliffe, Celia Mangeng and Maggie Dance, it was a dream start with no fewer than ten shots scored in five ends.

Then South Molton rallied and took over for the next five ends until the contest was level at 11-11.

Then it was Budleigh’s turn once again and the team piled up the shots to a final score of 21-14. Heavitree are the opponents in the next round.

An over-50s league game away at Sidmouth produced two points for the visitors with a 21-15 win for Joan Shaw (skip), Dorothy MacConville and Marilyn Jackson.

Beautiful sunshine was provided for the ladies County Pairs competition played at Budleigh and three of the four Budleigh entries got through to the second round. Joan Shaw (skip) and Margaret Ratfliffe came closest to progressing further, losing by just one shot in the last end.

Budleigh were pleased to hear that Devon beat Herefordshire in the inter-County Johns Trophy competition as two home players were selected for the squad, Angie Fish playing and Maggie Dance a reserve.
