Budleigh ambush leaders Torquay

AFTER trailing throughout the match, Budleigh pulled off a dramatic last end victory to send Interclub Division Two leaders Torquay United B crashing to their first defeat of the season, writes Paul Griffin.

AFTER trailing throughout the match, Budleigh pulled off a dramatic last end victory to send Interclub Division Two leaders Torquay United B crashing to their first defeat of the season, writes Paul Griffin.

Torquay started strongly and after five ends in the four rink match were leading 25-14. After ten ends they had maintained their advantage to lead 44-34.

After fifteen ends Torquay still held a ten shot advantage with the score at 63-53.

Budleigh then began to respond and by the twentieth end had reduced the deficit to just three shots with the score at 79-76.

Then came a remarkable last end in which Budleigh scored on all four rinks, gaining seven shots in total, to lead for the first time in the match and win on three of the four rinks contested, and by 83-79 overall.

The Budleigh away rink, skipped by Alan Cottle with Paul Griffin, Brian Evans and John Dill, led from start to finish, winning 23-12.

The Budleigh home rink of Richard Cooper, Peter Burch, Gerry Roberts and skip David Evans, after trailing 15-13 at fourteen ends, finished strongly to win 26-16.

The other Budleigh home rink, skipped by Tony Stone with John Vanstone, Bob Rivers and Mike Shaw, made a remarkable recovery by coming back from 19-5 down after twelve ends to win 24-21.

In a busy week Budleigh bowlers had two other fine victories.

The first came when they travelled to Axminster to play a three rink mixed friendly and came away winning on two of the rinks and by 56-42 overall.

Terry Kelly's rink of Paul Griffin, Avis Bartlett and John Vanstone led all the way to win 26-9 and Peter Burch's rink of Richard Cooper, Yvonne Smith and Jim Letten held off a strong challenge by Axminster to win their rink 18-15.

The other success came in a four rink mixed friendly against Exonia where Budleigh won on three rinks and by 76-51 overall.

In this match Budleigh's rink, skipped by David Evans, with Lilian Grainger and Brian Evans recovered from an early deficit to win 22-16 and Bob River's triple of John Vanstone and Diane Dixon led throughout to win 17-9.

The rink skipped by Brian Ellery with Richard Cooper, Yvonne Smith and Tony Lim performed strongly to win 23-11.

In the County Unbadged Singles competition David Evans defeated E Sharman of Honiton to make it through to the next round.

With the match all square at 16-16 after twenty-three ends, David scored five shots without reply to take the match 21-16.

In the Symes Robinson and Lee-sponsored Budleigh Evening League, Exonia consolidated their top position with a maximum points 46-27 two rink victory over the Budleigh Eagles.

In the other match played last week the Reds beat the Budleigh Hawks 44-26 in a contest that saw both sides win a rink each.
