Taking ten points out of a possible sixteen in the last two matches of the season was enough to seal the Budleigh Over-60’s A team promotion to division two of the Devon Triples League, writes Paul Griffin.

In the first match of the week Budleigh entertained Morchard Bishop and in a low scoring encounter won on both rinks and by 32-26 overall. John Dance’s triple of John Vanstone and Alan Purdham, after trailing for most of their game, put in a strong finish to gain eight shots on the last four ends and win 16-12.

On the other rink the lead changed hands a number of times before Tony Stone’s triple of Burges Stace and Paul Griffin held on to win by the narrowest of margins 15-14. In the second match Budleigh were beaten 36-31 by St. Thomas with the rinks shared. Budleigh’s winning rink, who won 22-11, was skipped by Tony Stone with Burges Stace and Paul Griffin.

Budleigh B were beaten 33-24 by St Thomas B with the rinks shared. In this match Gerry Robert’s triple of Wally Nickels and Rob Jerrard won their rink 16-11. The C team travelled to Morchard Bishop to play their B team and drew 26-26 with the rinks shared. Budleigh’s triple of Keith Burgess, David Blackwell and skip Peter Norman recovered from 4-10 down after nine ends to win 16-14.

During the week Budleigh entertained the touring side Grange BC to two five rink mixed friendlies and although the rink tally was shared five all the visitors were 191-176 winners on aggregate scores.

The top performing home rink with a 27-11 victory was skipped by Jean Watts with Margaret Ratcliff, Sidney Cole and Greg Fish. In the final match of the week Budleigh hosted Lyme Regis in a five rink mixed triples and lost narrowly 96-93 with the visitors winning on three of the rinks.
