EXMOUTH'S Steff Bridge made a winning start to her defence of the kitesurfing world racing title she won last year with victory in the first round of the 2008 competition.

Bridge, sponsored by North Kiteboarding, flew down to Cancun in Mexico for the first of five events in this PKRA World Tour.

Bridge finished ahead of the field on days one and two, then had a frustrating day watching from the beach as day three was called off due to severe off-shore winds.

Bridge won once in four starts on the last day, but had already done enough to win the event in the first two rounds of racing.

Bridge, who runs Edge Watersports in Exmouth, said she was pleased to go straight in at the top of the rankings as the competition has stiffened since last year.

"More people are racing this year because of the publicity generated last year," said Bridge.

"The organisers have extened the World Championships to five events this year because of the extra interest.

"As I am also competing in the British Championship, it will be a busy season."

Bridge is home for just two weeks before heading off to Leucate in southern France for round two.
