THE Exmouth Sea Angling Association fished its second drawn pairs fixture of the 2009 season but once again the weather was not kind, writes Si Boeree.

This match saw 28 members turn out at the West Bay venue with members fishing from the far end of the East beach to the western extremes of the West Promenade.

Strong Southwesterlies had churned up the sea which made fishing difficult, but, from the start, small-eyed ray, plaice and bass were being reported.

Weed was a problem throughout, but, come the end of the event, eight different species had been caught.

There were near specimen fish for Gaz Bowden and Si Boeree and congratulations go out to junior member Dan Steer from Exeter who broke two ESAA junior records with a nice small-eyed ray and pout whiting.

Come the weigh-in, top place in the drawn pairs went to Gaz Bowden and Shauna Hole with a total of 316%.

Second were Si Boeree and Babs Hale-Westcott with 200% while thirdwith 175%were Darren Steer and Andy Hale.

Best specimen was won by Boeree with a pout whiting of 1lb 6oz while top junior was Dan Steer (who also out-fished his Father, Darren!).

As is normal practice in the ESAA, to help preserve fish stocks members immediately record their own catch and all fish not intended for the pot are returned to the sea safe and sound.

The ESAA hold regular competitions and social events throughout the year and more details are available at www.exmouthsaa.co.uk
