Bee business at Tospahm for Madeira Ladies'

LAST week saw the start of the DCLBA Pairs competition with 14 pairs from Madeira taking part, four at Topsham and 10 at Phear Park, writes Jenny Smith.

LAST week saw the start of the DCLBA Pairs competition with 14 pairs from Madeira taking part, four at Topsham and 10 at Phear Park, writes Jenny Smith. Several teams played through two and three rounds but in the end the winners from each venue who took part in the section finals at Madeira on Friday were Jacky Howle with Lou Harvey as lead and Sue Harriott with Liz Smerdon. There was a bit of excitement at Topsham - play was abandoned when a swarm of bees decided to join in. Eventually they settled in a nearby tree and play resumed.Sue Harriott and Liz Smerdon did well in the Pairs finals and were delighted to win their place in the national finals at Leamington Spa as one of the Devon finalists, beating teams from Torquay Kings, Hemyock and Ilfracombe on the way.Jacky Howle and Lou Harvey played well but were knocked out in a close-fought first round on Friday against the DCLBA President and her partner, but Lou Harvey was delighted to get her first county point.Two Madeira teams have been entered in the Grace Mathews Top Club competition and were due to play their first rounds on Saturday, one at home and one away. Madeira A played St Thomas at home and were pleased to win overall in what became very difficult playing conditions due to the torrential rain towards the end. Madeira B were expecting to play Exonia but that game has been rescheduled due to the weather conditions.At home Sandra Mott and Pat Cain won the 4-wood and 2-wood singles respectively with 21 shots to 17 and 17 shots to 12. The triples, with Brenda Marks, Jean Healey and Jean Rainton, drew at 17 all. The fours, skipped by Eileen Bagley with May Dyson, Barbara Williams and Captain Carole Worth, had a comfortable 10 shots to 12. Madeira's only losing team was the Pairs. They will play Topsham in the next round on June 20.
