Bass continue to be the target for many anglers at the moment with the estuaries, beaches and rock marks all capable of producing fish.
Totnes angler Tony White has found plenty this week, as has Ian Ross of Torquay’s Euro Angling, who fished with his four year-old son Romeo at Teignmouth where they both land plenty of fish, unfortunately nothing big, so all were returned.
Bass also featured in Exmouth SAC’s monthly round up with some good-sized fish being landed. Their recent club competition fished at Branscombe was fished in unfavourable condition and was won with a meagre 116 per cent consisting of two Mackerel by Mike Richardson.
Marcus Ward took a trip to the mighty Chesil Beach and his best fish was a Plaice weighing in at 2lbs 8oz. Elsewhere, Martin Larkin continues to find plenty of hungry Gilthead Bream and Honiton SAC‘s Darren Bell a double figure Starry Smoothhound Mackerel are being caught from the usual marks, although they appear to be there one day and not the next.
Exmouth Sac report a new Club record Golden Grey Mullet of 3lbs 0oz 5dm falling to the rod of Stu Howard.
A few members of Honiton SAC took a trip across the water to Ireland and fished hard for a few days, landing 21 fish over 100% of specimen weight, including some magnificent Trigger Fish, notably to Mike Spiller and Junior angler Archie Sweetland, who also managed Pollack and Ballan Wrasse amongst his fish.
Having seen a post on Facebook this week where a dog unfortunately managed to get wrapped in a set of Mackerel feathers at Berry Head, this is a timely reminder that we all need to take old tackle and line home with us for the safety of all.
Newbarn Angling Centre has produced a couple of double figure fish this week for regulars, Steve Brettle and Bob Wooster, fishing with his young grandson, who also managed to catch some silvers on a whip.
Trevor Chapman took his friend 74 year-old Steve Pooley on his first fishing trip for 60 years. They went to Rocombe Ponds where they had a good session catching carp to about 6lbs, Steve is well and truly hooked and can’t wait to go again.
The fish of the month competition for August was won by Chris Wagstaff with his shore caught Smoothhound of 15lbs 10oz. To be in with a chance of winning in September, please get your pictures and reports in by email to johnsherlockfish@gmail.com. The competition is kindly sponsored by Sidewinder Lures and Newbarn Angling Centre.
